College Football America’s 2014 Coaching Carousel: Anderson, Babers move up

No firings today on the FBS coaching carousel. Just hirings.

First, Arkansas State announced that Bruce Anderson would take over as head coach. Anderson spent the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator at North Carolina under Larry Fedora. So you can expect a lot of points from the Red Wolves next season. Crazily, the Red Wolves are on their fifth head coach in five years – Steve Roberts (2010), Hugh Freeze (2011), Gus Malzahn (2012) and Bryan Harsin (2013). Freeze, Malzahn and Harsin are now at Ole Miss, Auburn and Boise State, respectively.

So, if you’re looking for bigger and better things, a stop in Jonesboro, AR, is in order.

Meanwhile Bowling Green became the second FBS program to hit the FCS ranks for a new head coach, luring Dino Babers away from Eastern Illinois. In just two years at Tony Romo’s alma mater Babers went 19-7, including a 12-2 record this season and a run to the FCS national quarterfinals.

So we’re down to just two openings out of 13 this offseason. Army is looking and CBSSports.com reported that former Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe is interested. Then, of course, there’s Texas, which figures to take a while and be one of the grandest coaching searches in recent memory. SI.com is taking a comedic approach, unveiling a March Madness-style bracket game on Thursday. Thirty-two coaches are seeded Nos. 1-8 in four different regions and readers are asked to vote on who would win each matchup.

The No. 1 seeds? Jon Gruden, David Shaw, Charlie Strong and Nick Saban, the last of which we all assume is spoken for. The most absurd? Mack Brown is a No. 8 seed against Strong in the Ain’t Played Nobody edition. Gimme Brown in an upset.

We’re holding steady at 13 head coaching changes in FBS.
