2013 FBS Coaching Carousel: Turnover at New Mexico State

Yes, some teams are already planning for next year. It’s that time of year for those teams that don’t make it to a bowl game.

Well, I thought we were done. But I guess not.

In perhaps the worst-timed departure of a FBS head coach since Greg Schiano’s departure from Rutgers last year, New Mexico State head coach DeWayne Walker got out of Las Cruces earlier this week to take an assistant coaching position with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Truth be told, it’s hard to figure out how Walker survived as long as he did. He went just 10-40 as the head coach.

But then again Walker found a way out, which is probably good for him. Thanks to the folding of the WAC, the Aggies have to go it alone in 2013 as an FBS independent. They reportedly just have nine scheduled games so far and are trying to get a tenth with Abilene Christian, which is about to make the jump to FCS. It’s gonna get ugly unless the Sun Belt takes them back.

Doug Martin, the team’s offensive coordinator, is the interim coach. I’d expect him to become the full-time head coach. I can’t imagine the Aggies can attract a brand-name coach right now.

Walker’s departure brings the head coaching changes to 31 for 2013. Wow.
