College Football America’s 2014 Coaching Carousel: Creighton, Diaco on way to new jobs

Two more FBS openings are off the market, starting in Ypsilanti, MI, where the Eastern Michigan Eagles are searching for their first winning record in more than two decades.

The new savior? Drake coach Chris Creighton, who comes to Ypsi with a career record of 139-46 at three different stops. Creighton’s coaching career started incredibly early as he became a head coach one year out of college at Ottawa (KS), and worked his way up to Wabash and then Drake.

Creighton replaces Ron English, who did practically nothing in nearly five years at EMU and was fired before the end of the season.

Meanwhile, UConn hasn’t made an official announcement, but reported late Wednesday night that the Huskies have lured Notre Dame defensive coordinator Bob Diaco from South Bend to helm the program. Diaco was named the 2012 Frank Broyles Award winner, given to the nation’s best assistant. The Irish defense has been great the past two seasons, and there was some belief that Diaco would leave after last season. But the Irish’s run to the BCS National Championship game probably thwarted a departure.

Now he’ll take over a Huskies team that was terrible last season, which led to the firing of Paul Pasqualoni.

That’s the second Brian Kelly disciple to get a FBS job this offseason. Chuck Martin, who was the head coach at Division II Grand Valley State — where Kelly got his start — took over at Miami (OH) earlier this month. GVSU won two Division II championships and went 74-7 after succeeding Kelly.

With these hirings, we’re down to three open positions at the moment. But we’re all waiting for that next domino to fall at Texas, where everyone expects Mack Brown to step aside soon. And if Texas really is able to lure Nick Saban away from Alabama, well then all heck is going to break loose on the coaching carousel. Because Alabama isn’t going to hire just anyone for that job.
