As a member of the panel that will select the 2014 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award winner, each week I’ll publish the release awarding the Player of the Week award. The release is below. Check back here each week to find out who will win the honor en route to selection of the inaugural Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award winner later this year. The College Football America 2014 Yearbook Encyclopedia featured some of these players earlier this football season. The book is available on iTunes for just $9.99. Get a copy today. It’s the most comprehensive College Football book of its kind.
TYLER, Texas – University of Oklahoma freshman running back Samaje Perine has been named The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week for the thirteenth week of the 2014 college football season.
This is the second time this year the Big 12 running back has received this honor. Perine set the NCAA all-time FBS single-game rushing record with 427 yards on 34 carries and five touchdowns in a 44-7 win against Kansas. The record had been broken just one week prior by Melvin Gordon, Wisconsin with 407 yards. “It’s still surreal”, Perine said. “I just looked at it as doing what I had to do to help my team. I’m not really feeling special in any type of way.” Perine also surpassed the OU school record of 294 yards set by Greg Pruitt against Kansas State on 10/23/71 between the second and third quarters combined (317). Pruitt’s mark had stood for 43 years.
“The guy is just so exceptional in everything that he does,” head coach Bob Stoops said. “We were thinking about resting him, and then someone said he only needs 35 more yards, and you know, that’s just too close not to do it, and there’s too much time left in the game.”
Perine graduated from Hendrickson High School, Pflugerville, Texas.
