Tulsa head coach Bill Blankenship was on College Football America’s hot seat coaches list in the preseason for a reason. Tulsa made the move on Monday, letting Blankenship go after a 2-10 season.
Blankenship was elevated to the position after Todd Graham left for Pittsburgh. His success early was tied to Graham’s recruits. As they disappeared so did Blankenship’s success. Tulsa was 19-8 in Blankenship’s first two seasons and 5-19 in his last two. Tulsa may be the smallest program in Division I FBS, enrollment-wise, but it has nice facilities and plays in a conference, the American Athletic, where it should win a half-dozen games a year.
On Thursday it is expected that UAB will shutter the football program and let its head coach, Bill Clark, go. He’d be a good place for Tulsa to start. Once the move is official, we’ll add Clark to the list, even though the job won’t be filled.
This move brings the job turnover to seven so far. College Football America will keep you apprised of every coaching hiring and firing during the 2015 Coaching Carousel season.
