Ben Hogan: The Myths Everyone Knows, The Man No One Knew.
During this weekend’s PGA Championship, held at Whistling Straits, Texan Jordan Spieth will try to capture his third major title of the year. If he wins his first PGA Championship, Spieth would tie Tiger Woods and the legendary Fort Worth golfer, Ben Hogan, as the only golfers to hold three major titles in one year. Speaking of Ben Hogan, the timing couldn’t have been better as I just finished reading a terrific new book by Fort Worth author Tim Scott called “Ben Hogan: The Myths Everyone Knows, The Man No One Knew.” This book I found particularly interesting because Scott had a personal working relationship with Hogan. Scott worked at the AMF Ben Hogan Company from 1969 to 1982. During his last eight years at the company he was the president of sales and marketing, a position that allowed him to work closely with Hogan. I thought Scott did a wonderful job collecting all the great stories he presents in his book from numerous people that also had personal relationships with Hogan. Scott’s book offers the reader a fascinating glimpse into the iconic golfer’s life.
