Sure, playing a little early in the week and on national television is great for recruiting and boosters. But during Week 1 of Big 12 football it seemed the earlier you played, the more sluggish you looked.
I was at the Oklahoma State-Central Michigan game up in Mount Pleasant, Mich., on Thursday night and that seemed to be the case with the Cowboys, who eked out a 24-13 win over the pesky Chippewas who managed a near-sellout for the rare home game against a Power 5 conference team. Then I returned to my hotel in Mount Pleasant to see No. 2 TCU beat Minnesota, 23-17. The Horned Frogs were sluggish, but they won.
Once Friday dawned the Big 12 teams became sharper and more dominant. One could say the opponents were of a lower quality, but we’ll dissect all of that below in our Week 1 review. Top 25 rankings are for the week of the game.
