Kansas State (1-0) at UT-San Antonio (0-1), Saturday, 11 a.m. CST
TV: Fox Sports 1
Series record: First meeting.
Game preview: Kansas State comes into this game with some issues. Quarterback Jesse Ertz is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury and safety Dante Barnett suffered a shoulder injury last week and it’s unclear if he will play against the Roadrunners. That leaves the Wildcats with a new starting quarterback in Joe Hubener and an experience deficit in the secondary. The Wildcats can lean on new special teams ace Morgan Burns, who returned last week’s opening kickoff for a touchdown and redshirt freshman fullback Winston Dimel, who scored twice last week. But that’s not the best backup plan. Head coach Bill Snyder is hoping Hubener shows progress with a full week of starter’s reps and young defensive players like linebacker Elijah Lee (six tackles last week) keep playing hard. The Roadrunners have the potential to be real pesky. The Roadrunners lost to Arizona last week, but only by 10 points, as redshirt freshman quarterback Blake Bogenschutz threw for 332 yards and two scores. How much of that had to do with Arizona losing All-American linebacker Scooby Wright remains to be seen. I see this as a mild upset special, but Kansas State prevails.
RandH Prediction: Kansas State 32, UT-San Antonio 23.
