UNIVERSITY PARK, Texas — SMU appeared ready to pony up with an upset early, causing Baylor to bear down and dash those dreams late.

The No. 4-ranked Bears scored the only points of the second half for a 56-21 victory over SMU on Friday night in front of 32,047 at Ford Stadium. The win spoiled the debut as Chad Morris as head coach of the Mustangs.

After a first quarter that took right at an hour to complete, Baylor held a 28-14 lead. The Mustangs trimmed that lead to a touchdown by halftime, but the Bears flexed their offensive muscles by torching the Ponies for 723 yards, including 423 through the air with new starting quarterback Seth Russell at the controls.

Baylor receivers Corey Coleman and KD Cannon combined for eight catches for 282 yards and two touchdowns, while Jay Lee had three catches for 70 yards and three scores.
