St. Ambrose overcame three turnovers, 13 penalties and an eight-point late third-quarter deficit to rally for a season-opening 25-21 win at Concordia (Mich.) Saturday afternoon in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Patrick Smith threw two touchdown passes, the last a 9-yard toss to Chris Klotz with 4:22 to play to put the Bees in front for good, and the SAU defense came up with two late stops to seal the win.
St. Ambrose had built a 13-7 halftime lead on a Joey Zito 1-yard touchdown run and a pair of Matt Cotiguala field goals. But Concordia scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to grab a 21-13 lead.
Late in the third, SAU started its comeback with a 9-play, 72-yard drive. Smith completed four passes for 69 yards during the drive which culminated with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Mosher with 1:37 remaining in the third quarter. St. Ambrose appeared to tie the game at 21-21 when Smith found Max Brozovich on the ensuing two-point conversion, but the play was nullified by an offensive pass interference penalty. The following two-point try from the 18-yard line was unsuccessful.
