MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – For a few nerve-wracking minutes, the Vanderbilt fans who made the half-hour trek to Murfreesboro to see the Commodores take on the Blue Raiders began to have flashbacks to 2005.
And 2002. And even 2001.
The two teams had met three previous times since the Blue Raiders moved up to college football’s top level, and each time the Commodores found themselves on the short end of the scoreboard despite a hardfought game against their neighbors.
This game was no less competitive than the previous matchups with Middle leading 6-3 after three quarters. But when the Blue Raiders scored on an 18-yard Brent Stockstill-to-Ed Batties connection – their 8th of the year – you would have been hard-pressed to find anybody in the stadium who thought this would end up with anything other than a Middle Tennessee victory.
