CANTON, N.C. – This wasn’t supposed to happen.

In fact, it hadn’t happened in 24 years, but thanks to an upset in Canton, North Carolina, the St. Stephens (Hickory, NC) Indians won their first playoff game since 1991.

The 14-13 win over the Pisgah (Canton, NC) Black Bears means the Indians advance to the second round of the NCHSAA Class 3A playoffs where they’ll meet the Hibriten (Lenoir, NC) Panthers, another surpise winner. St. Stephens (7-5) was the No. 13 seed entering Friday’s contest against the No. 4 Black Bears (8-4) while No. 12 Hibriten upset the No. 5 East Gaston (Mt. Holly, NC) Warriors 43-28.
