The defending Southwest Junior College Football Conference champion Kilgore College Rangers, who are ranked No. 6 in NJCAA, picked up where they left off last season with a 35-10 victory over league rival Tyler Junior College at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium.

Willie Gooden, a former Kilgore College player, won his debut as head coach of the Rangers, while Thomas Rocco lost his first game as head coach of the Apaches. It was the 123rd meeting between the two teams dating back to 1947.
Kilgore receiver Omar Manning caught six passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns. Rangers quarterback Jacob Frazier threw for 279 yards and three touchdowns. The Rangers pulled away after the Apaches cut the lead to 14-10 in the third quarter. The two teams will square off again in conference play Oct. 26 in Tyler. Kilgore is back at home on Aug. 31 to battle Navarro, while Tyler plays at Trinity Valley.
