NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Tarleton State is back. After advancing to the third round of the Division II playoffs last season, the Texans opened the 2019 campaign with a 37-26 road victory over FCS program Stephen F. Austin at Homer Bryce Stadium.
Tarleton State, coached by former SFA quarterback Todd Whitten, also set a new school record for total offense in a game with 667 yards. The win spoiled the home coaching debut of Colby Carthel, who lost to the Texans twice last season while coaching Texas A&M-Commerce. Daniel McCants rushed for 179 yards and two touchdowns (including 48- and 99-yarders), while J.F. Thomas hauled in seven catches for 193 yards and two scores (including a 63-yarder) for Tarleton State. Da’Leon Ward had 149 rushing yards on 21 carries in the losing cause for SFA (0-2). SFA plays at Southern Utah on Sept. 14, while the Texans host Doane.
