BEAUMONT, Texas — The Lamar Cardinals, fresh off an FCS playoff appearance, rolled past NAIA opponent Bethel (TN), 65-16, to open the 2019 campaign at Provost Umphrey Stadium.

Senior quarterback Jordan Hoy stole the show for Lamar by throwing for 226 yards and three touchdowns to go along with 50 rushing yards and three more scores. Three different Cardinals receivers — Myles Wanza, Erik Pizzaro and Case Robinson — caught touchdowns passes. Carmoni Green led the team in receiving with four catches for 71 yards, while three different Lamar rushers — Derrion Randle, Cole Starnes and A.J. Walker — eclipsed 70 yards. On defense, Devio Christmon and Jeremy Johnson tallied 11 tackles each for Lamar as it limited the Wildcat offense to just 197 total yards. Brandon Moore also intercepted a pass and returned it 48 yards. Lamar remains at home to take on Mississippi Valley State on Sept. 7, while Bethel (TN) plays at Bluefield.
